Client Info: The Royal Ontario Museum collects and exhibits the cultural and natural history of Canada and the world. The collections and research are the basis of the ROM’s international reputation; the collections are diverse in their subject matter and number more than five million objects. The ROM’s research, exhibitions and educational activities increase understanding of cultural and natural diversity, their relationships, significance, preservation, and conservation.

The Challenge:
The Renaissance ROM project will see a wonderful transformation of the Royal Ontario Museum. This bold revitalization includes six new galleries in the crystal design by architect Daniel Libeskind. This renovation and construction will take place over several years.
The ROM came to CNSG to provide Internet enables cameras to document the demolition of the old wing and the construction of the beautiful, new addition. Later in the project the ROM came to CNSG with it’s biggest challenge to date: Give us a view from the cabin of the 250 foot lifting crane on the construction site and send that image to the world.

The Solution:
CNSG rose to both challenges. The first stage was to mount a static IP enabled camera on the roof of a Hotel across the street front the museum. Using a time lapse capture module we were able to capture single frames every day during construction. For the grand opening, the single images will be assembled into a movie. This dramatic presentation the audience will see the demolition, site preparation and like a Phoenix, the new crystal addition rises to proclaim a new era for the ROM.

The second stage, CNSG saw an opportunity to show off our wireless camera technologies. A custom enclosure was designed and built for the equipment and camera for the lifting boom on the crane. The antenna broadcasts what the operator sees to a base station 250" below. This dramatic view is then sent to the ROM’s website. The entire system was designed in such a way that the image is delivered regardless of the orientation of the lifting crane and conditions.

What they say about CNSG:  "In May 2003 we contracted with CNSG to supply us with a webcam to track the construction of the museum’s 170,000 square foot addition (www.rom.on.ca). I have found Canadian Networks to be a reliable and professional contractor. They provided us with good advice on the appropriate technology to use, and worked with us to configure and install the camera in a physical and network space over which we have to control. I have no reservations recommending the work of Canadian Networks."
